2007-2008 Chattahoochee High School
Coach Carmichael - Weight Training
Course Syllabus
I. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
· The Weight Training course will be based on the “Bigger, Faster, Stronger System” for physical performance enhancement. This is the most widely used system in high school athletic programs in the United States.
· The BFS System is designed for all sports as well as athletes and non-athletes alike.
· The BFS System calls for a set of core lifts that are designed to build core strength in the major muscle groups and a set of auxiliaries that help build supporting muscle groups or stabilizing muscles.
· The class will also consist of speed and agility exercises that will increase the student’s overall sense of balance, explosiveness and agility.
II. GRADING PROCEDURE:
· Class Assignments, Participation and Dress: 70%
1. Students are expected to participate every day.
2. Inadequate effort or failure to perform all sets/reps of a workout may result in point deductions.
3. Students start each semester with a 100 average for participation.
4. Every day a student fails to dress out or participate in the workout will result in a 2 point deduction off the final participation grade. These cannot be made up.
5. Every absence from class over 5 for the semester, will result in a 1 point deduction from their participation grade unless made up. (see make-up policy)
6. Only a doctor’s note will be allowed for excuses for not dressing or working out. The note must list specifically the nature of the injury and the limitations for the student and how long the student is exempt from workouts. Alternative assignments will be given to students who meet this requirement.
II. cont…
· Skill Grade – 10%
1. Each student will take periodic skills test to determine their fitness level. Grades will not be given based on the student’s performance on the tests but rather the completion of the tests. They are designed to give the student a progress report on their fitness and strength level.
· Final Exam – 15%
· Workout Journal – 5%
Each student will keep a folder in which they will record their daily workouts on record sheets provided by Coach Carmichael. This folder will be turned in at the end of the semester.

· Opportunities designed to allow a student to recover from a low or failing grade will be allowed when all work required to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including attendance.
· Students should contact the teacher concerning recovery opportunities. All recovery work must be directly related to the course objectives and must be completed 10 school days prior to the end of the semester.
· Teachers will determine when and how students with extenuating circumstances may improver their grades.
· Participation in an athletic team can not be substituted for participation in this class.

There will only be one recovery opportunity per failed major assignment or test. The individual teacher will determine the means of recovery. The student must initiate the process within 5 days of notification of a failing grade on a major assignment.
